hen Richard's party comes across 'listener' Renn, a powerful mind-reader, sold to Darken's men, he waves Kahlan's caution for his own safety and decides to save to boy regardless of risk. The knave behaves like a spoiled utter ingrate, but Richard spares no effort and wins his trust. Renn's father, presumed dead, turns up and takes his son back, but as Richard suspects only to sell him again. The soldiers troop which accepts him has already chained Zed, who came to them pretending to offering his magical services to Darken, actually to protect an undercover rebel whom Renn soon exposed. This time, Renn has earned about good and helps trick the fiends.
